Twenty-three Nepali girls about to be taken to a third country on the pretext of foreign employment have been rescued from India.
The girls were rescued with the support of the Indian government from the northern State of Mizoram of India. The girls were handed over to Nepali authorities in the border transit of Kakarvitta this morning. They are now taking shelter at the Maiti Nepal eastern regional office, according to Chief District Officer Janak Raj Dahal. The girls were rescued from a place called Champhi in Mizoram, that borders with Myanmar. It may be noted that 178 Nepali girls had been rescued few months ago from Manipur, also bordering Myanmar.
The human traffickers are reportedly using the route via Myanmar to traffic girls in the pretext of foreign employment to the gulf and south-east Asian countries.
Under-secretary Krishna Prasad Bhusal at the Ministry of Women, Children and Elderly Citizens said an investigation has been launched to find out how the girls were taken to the Myanmar border by the middlemen.
