Deputy Speaker Tumbahangphe resign from her post

Deputy Speaker Dr. Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe has resigned from her post on Monday. Tumbahamphe, who had staked claim to the post of Speaker, finally announced her resignation while chairing a meeting House of Representatives.

Addressing the meeting of the House of Representatives , she said she has paved the way for the House to carry on its business with the conclusion that a people’s elected body should not be kept in confusion for long.

“I decided to tender resignation from my post coming to the conclusion that the situation of complication that has arisen as the sovereign people’s elected institution as remained without a Speaker for long due to an unexpected and unusual circumstance,” she explained the reason for her resignation from the post.

The Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had been asking for her resignation as Speaker and Deputy Speaker should be from different parties as per the constitutional provision.

Addressing the House at the beginning of the meeting, Tumbahamphe, “I would like to inform the House that I have reached a conclusion to clear the way.”

The post is vacant since October 1, 2019, after the then Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post on October 1 following rape charges against him by female staff at the Parliament Secretariat.

The House of Representatives will start the process for the election of a new Speaker today through a meeting slated for 4 pm today. Mahanta Thakur will be chairing today’s meeting as he is the senior-most member.
