The sugarcane farmers have called off their sit-in programme following the commitment of Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Matrika Yadav to clear the dues of the farmers within a week.
On Sunday, Minister Yadav has made commitment to the farmers to pay their dues within a week by visiting the agitating farmers in the Everest Sugar Mills at Ramnagar, Mahottari.
Minister Yadav has also promised to take steps to resolve the problems of the farmers during the period adding that he himself would join the sit-in programme with the farmers if the payment was not made in a week.
On the occasion, Minister Yadav said, “We will immediately solve the problems of payment. And, sugarcane development board would oversee the issues for permanent solution of the sugarcane farmers.”
Following the assurance of the minister, the farmers’ 22-day-long agitation has been called off. However, the farmers have continued the padlock fixed in the gates of the sugar mill.
The sugarcane farmers of Mahottari were staging sit in for three weeks demanding a total of Rs 1.75 billion in dues from the sugar mills.
