Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun has said that a trend of imitating other languages to show that one is ‘intellectual’ was increasing.
At an inaugural session of the ‘National Mother Language Poetry Festival’ organised by Nepal Academy here today on the occasion of International Mother Language Day 2019, Vice-President Pun said that there was no compulsion to speak other languages as a technology has already been developed to make human communication easier.
He pointed out that use of English language in government schools is the matter of sadness. The Vice-President further said that the languages spoken by all communities whether they are marginalized or other communities have equal importance.
Similarly, Chancellor of the Nepal Academy, Ganga Prasad Upreti, said that the Academy has been organising poem seminar in mother language for the past eight years with an objective of conserving mother languages. The Academy has also been organising different programmes regarding situation of languages.
Likewise, former Vice-Chancellor Bairagi Kainla and Satabdi Purush Satya Mohan Joshi said that different caste and their languages have made the country beautiful.
Vice-Chancellor of Academy, Dr Jagaman Gurung, Secretariat member Prof Jagat Prasad Upadhyay, said also stressed the need of conserving mother languages.
Chief of Mother Language Literature Department of the Academy, Laxmi Mali, said that the recited poems would be published as a form of a book in days ahead.
February 21 is being celebrated as the International Mother Language Day since 2000 across the world while Nepal has started to celebrate the Day for the past eight years.
