Journalists should motivate social transformation – Krishna Bahadur Mahara

Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara has said that the journalists should play the role of a catalyst for social transformation. Inaugurating the central general assembly and statute convention of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) here today, he said the journalists have an important role in bringing changes to the society.

The critical role of the media sector is inevitable when the society is in the process of a change, he said while adding that the time now is to fight against anarchy. It was against autocracy in the past.

Chief Minister of Gandaki province Prithivi Subba Gurung said implementation of federalism is facing difficulty due to the centralized mentality, and pointed out the critical role of the media sector for successful enforcement of federalism in the country.

At the program,  Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Banskota said the government was committed to not allow violation of press freedom. “The government is in favour of free press,” he said while sharing that a task force had been formed to make recommendations related to the press sector concerning the new civil code.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari pointed out the important role of journalism to prosper the country.
Likewise, Nepal Communist Party’s politburo member Yogesh Bhattarai said the government was committed to safeguarding press freedom while pointing to what he called rumors being spread in a bid to sabotage the government.
