Asia Pacific Internet Summit concludes



Kathmandu, March 1

A nine-day Asia Pacific Internet Summit concluded here today discussing a range of issues including the latest developments in internet and network engineering and future innovations in the field.

The event brought together around 900 Internet technologists from around 50 countries over the world to discuss advanced networking topic during the 10-day jamboree held from 19 to 28 February. Hands-on workshops on IoT, Wireless Sensors, Security, Routing, Virtualization and Network management held during the first week was followed by conference and tutorials with topic including DNSSec, Secure Routing, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) on the technical side. Non-technical discussion on cross border co-operation, enhancing government to Internet technical community co-operation also took place.

During the conference, internet and wireless networking campaigner Dr. Mahabir Pun talked about  smart cities of the future and his latest project, the Nepal Innovation Centre. He shared that the Centre has already been working on developing a medical drone, water processing technology and maintenance of e-rickshaw and tempo batteries, while appealing experts for support in that regard.

 

During the conference, the renowned Cloudflare Company announced the beginning of its Data Centre in Nepal. This is the second such centre of the Company after India in South Asia. The operation of the Centre is expected to make internet browsing service more efficient and also help minimize the cost of internet bandwith going abroad.

 

The Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) 2018 was hosted by the Asia Pacific Internet Association (APIA) and Asia Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) with the local support of Internet Exchange Nepal (NPIX).

The event was supported by Nepal Telecommunications Authority in the public sector and local IT organizations – Nepal Network Operators Group (NPNOG), Nepal Research and Education Network (NREN), Federation of Computer Associations of Nepal (FCAN). Companies including Google, Facebook, Equinix, VeriSign, DE-CIX, Netflix, Telstra, LINX, Airtel, Juniper, Amazon Web Services and others were the global Sponsors for the event.
