Cabinet fails to name new IGP

10 February 2020, Kathmandu

The cabinet meeting today called by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has failed to name new Inspector General of Police.

The post of IGP is falling vacant, as Nepal Police Chief Sarbendra Khanal is going on home leave on Tuesday a few days ahead of his retirement on age ground.

The scheduled meeting was expected to pick the new police chief today.

However, the meeting did not make any decision in this regard- sources shared. The source says the next Cabinet meeting to be held later this week will name the new police chief.

Deputy Generals of Police Thakur Gyawali and Tarani Prasad Lamsal are in the fray for the coveted post of next IGP.

Gyawali or Lamsal will also retire after around five months due to the 30-year service rule.
