Disaster management training to media persons

Nepal is at high risk of natural disaster but it is very weak in response and preparedness.

Experts pointed this out in a three-day training related to Disaster Risk Management organised for media persons by Home Ministry and Asian Development Preparedness Centre (ADPC) here which concluded today. They stressed the need of maintaining balance between development initiatives and Disaster Risk Reduction.

On the occasion, Joint-Secretary at the Home Ministry, Kedar Neupane, said that the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act has clearly mentioned about all types of disasters including about the role of the centre, province and local-level.

He said that National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority would be formed soon as mentioned in the Act and a regulation is going to be formulated in this regard.

Presenting a working paper on Mainstreaming Development in Natural Disaster Reduction, ADPC Programme Manager Man Bahadur Thapa expressed the view that attention should be paid in disaster management and as well as to maintain balance between development and disaster to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Similarly, Under-Secretary at Home Ministry, Umesh Kumar Dhakal, shed light about existing laws related to disaster risk reduction and management and structural arrangement.

Likewise, Communications Manager of ADPC, Bidya Rana, said that it was necessary to develop capacity of media persons as role of media persons was very significant in disaster risk reduction and management.

A total of 30 media persons of different media houses had participated in the workshop.
