Govt announces to use approved new map for administrative work

18 May 2020, Kathmandu

The government has announced to use the approved new map of Nepal for administrative work.

Informing that Council of Ministers has endorsed a new map of Nepal which includes lands encroached by India, the government’s Spokesperson Finance Minister Dr. Yuvaraj Khatiwada said that the map will now be used in administrative work as well.

“The Cabinet meeting held on Monday has approved the map covering all the encroached areas of Nepal. Now, our emblem and textbook will also be updated according to this map,” he said.

He informed that the provinces have also been separated in the new map to reflect the federalism of Nepal.

The map that includes Lipu Lekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura encroached by India was presented by Land Management Minister Padma Aryal at the cabinet meeting.

The decision comes after India constructed and inaugurated a link road via Lipu Lekh connecting Tibet’s Mansarovar.

The government had on Friday, in its policy and programs, pledged to issue a new map soon.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had criticized the unilateral construction of the road.

Immediately after the inclusion of Nepal’s territory in the map made public by India on November 2, 2019, parliamentary committees had put pressure on the Government of Nepal to make the new map public.
