Home Minister instructs police to be tough on narcotics smuggling

Kathmandu, March 10

Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa has instructed the police to be tough on controlling narcotics drugs smuggling.

The Home Minister issued this instruction today in a discussion with the officials of the Narcotics Drug Control Unit and the Narcotics Drug Control Bureau of Nepal Police under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On the occasion, he directed the police to not only catch the lesser narcotics peddlers but also to nab the linchpins. “Carry out works in such a way that the kingpins of the drug smugglers are nabbed where ever they are – whether within the country or abroad. Don’t let them off the hook even if they have political protection,” he said.

The Home Minister also instructed the Ministry and the police officers to prepare and forward to him an action plan to bust the narcotics smugglers and their network. He argued that family relations were becoming strained and the society becoming polluted due to the drug abuse problem.

Home Ministry Joint Secretary, Kedar Neupane said that there are some 200 thousand hard drug users in the country and their number was increasing at the rate of 11 per cent annually.
