Nepal Geological Society calls for minimizing risk posed by quakes

Kathmandu, April 26
Nepal Geological Society has advised for carrying out geological study of the surface and building quake-resistant infrastructure to remain safe from earthquakes.

Society’s Chairman Kabi Poudel in a statement on Wednesday noted that the risk of an earthquake in Gorkha and Dolakha among other areas continues to remain on basis of the national and international studies held after the Gorkha earthquake.

The stability of the building structure built without a fact-based geotechnical study on the boulders, shape of soil, depth and underground water cannot be trusted, it is stated.

Insisting that it is the government’s responsibility to disseminate the factual information on the fromearthquake to minimize its risk, the society has called for lending high priority for study and research of geological conditions.

The Society also demanded that the government take steps for formation of an influential body and organizational structure for research and study to minimize the impofearthquakes in Nepal.
