The government has decided to expedite the construction of the Nijgadh International Airport with top priority. Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Yogesh Bhattarai informed that the proposed airport in Bara would come into operation within the next five years.

Speaking at a program by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) in Kathmandu, Minister Bhattarai said the project was in the government’s priority list. He termed it as a ‘dream project’ while highlighting the essentiality of building the airport at Nijgadh.

He also expressed his commitment to implement the project rapidly as there was no room for taking a rest for the next five years. The work of fencing an area measuring 8,000 hectares has already been completed and the compensation distribution has been continued.

According to CAAN, it has already spent more than Rs one billion for compensation.

Meanwhile, the Investment Board has sought the project’s detailed proposal from the Switzerland-based Zurich International to construct the project.

The Ministry has sent a letter to the Ministry of Forest and Environment seeking its cooperation for felling down trees remaining within the area of 1,900 hectares during the first phase of construction.
