Asha: Winner of Asian Girls Community Development Award, 2019

Asha BK picked up the Asian Girl Community Development Award held at Taiwan on October 6, 2019, on the occasion of International Girl Child Day for her work in empowerment programs to prevent harmful practices, and encouraging girls to take up kickboxing, and other sports. After receiving the Award Asha said, “I will use this award to help girls in rural areas of Nepal to enjoy their human rights.”

Asha is an eighteen years old young girl living in Kawasoti Municipality ward-11, Nawalpur and a self-motivated girl who is the president of Nepal’s first Child Club i.e. Jagriti Child Club Nepal and also a peer educator of Girls Empowerment Project under Jagriti Child and Youth Concern Nepal (JCYCN)and KANALLAN. She has been providing training related to self-defense, Orientation Programs to prevent rape, child marriage, and sexual violence in schools and community level of Devchuli Municipality of Nawalpur and also in other municipalities. She is interested and active in the field of sports so, her main aim is to be a kick boxer in the future.

 Being a working president of the child club and Peer Educator of JCYCN, she has been supportive to the helpless, especially the girls who are suffering from violence, Cyber bullying, menstrual problem and various social taboos.

Throughout Asia, the Asian Girl Campaign invites partners to celebrate and promote the International Day of the Girl Child, in the Communities. Every year since 2012, The Garden Hope Foundation of Taiwan has been awarding the Asian Girl Campaign in Asia and Asian Girl Human Rights award in collaboration with Taiwan Government. This year, three award categories (Asian Girl Human Rights Award, Community Development Award, and STEM Award) were given.

 Similarly, Chen Liang-Yan from Taiwan won the new Asian Girl STEM Award for her outstanding achievements in science, and her efforts to teach other girls by volunteering in rural schools in Taiwan. The winner of the Asian Girl Human Rights Award Myagmarsuren Gansukh from Mongolia encouraged everyone to be a human rights defender. 15 Taiwanese girls received recognition for achievements in sports, community development, courage and adventure, creativity, and STEM.

 Ms. Bipana Sharma achieved the Asian Girl Human Right Award in 2015, Ashma Aryal in 2018 and Shradha Mahat was awarded as an Asian Girl Ambassador in 2014 from Nepal, and they have been continuously working in their sectors.

 JCYCN has been continuously working for girls empowerment and to uplift the condition of girls. JCYCN has also been conducting National level Girls Summit since 2012 in local, district, and provincial level and has been raising voice for the rights of girl child in collaboration with many other organizations and working partners.
