Organisation plans to rid country of street beggars in seven years



Kathmandu, June 10

The Sarbotkrista Jeevan Shaswat Chintan Sanstha, a humanitarian and spiritual organisation, plans to construct rehabilitation centres with an objective of ridding the country of street beggars within 2082 BS.

The organisation is currently sheltering 500 helpless people at its various rehabilitation centres set up at 10 places in the country.

This information was shared at a programme here on Saturday. It was announced on the occasion that Rs 370 thousand has been collected in support of the Manav Sewa Ashram, a subsidiary organisation of the Sanstha set up for rehabilitation of the underprivileged senior citizens who are living in the streets.

The organisation runs three such shelters for the helpless senior citizens in the Kathmandu valley. These shelters are in operation at Patan, Samakhusi and Budhanilkantha.

The programme was organised to raise fund for purchasing a vehicle to provide services to the senior citizens sheltered in these rehabilitation centres.
Patron of the Sanstha Dr Govinda Tandon said that Rs 300 thousand was collected through sale of tickets to the programme and Rs 70 thousand was provided by individual donors.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Women, Children, Senior Citizens and Social Welfare, Tham Maya Thapamagar assured of every support from the Ministry to the organisation in its humanitarian causes.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya, member-secretary of the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) Dr Pradip Dhakal, LP Bhanu Sharma of Jeevan Bigyan and Sanstha chairperson Ramji Prasad Adhikari also expressed their views on the occasion, stressing on the need of promoting organisations like the Sanstha for humanitarian service and helping out the underprivileged and helpless people.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada on Saturday inspected the rehabilitation shelter for helpless senior citizens run by the Ashram at Samakhusi, and assured of the government’s support to the Ashram.
