Owing to the increasing air pollution levels of late, the government has decided to shut all schools and colleges across the country for the next four days, until the weekend.
Officials of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology made the decision on Monday citing the existing pollution could have an adverse impact on the children’s health.
For the past few days, the air quality has significantly deteriorated across the country, in particular, in the central region including Kathmandu.
Wildfires among others have been cited as the biggest cause of the problem, and it is said that they would not decrease without rain or strong winds.
Before the meeting with his ministry’s officials today, Education Minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha had consulted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli about the next move.
Immediately after the meeting with the PM, Shrestha summoned education officials and proposed closing all academic institutions for a time being.
