Police arrest four people with 2.5 kilograms of uranium in Kathmandu

Police on Friday arrested four people with two and a half kilograms of uranium from Boudha, Kathmandu.

A team deployed by Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office in Ranipokhari arrested Prakash Chauhan, Narayan Singh Tamang, Januka Tamang and Manoj Neupane with the uranium, an explosive material.

AIG of Nepal Police, Hari Bahadur Pal said that this is the first time that police have recovered uranium in the country.

He said, “Uranium, which was stored in Boudha area, has been recovered.”

According to him, the value of the seized uranium is estimated to be more than Rs 5 billion.

This is the first time in Nepal that uranium has been recovered by the police. According to the police, the recovered uranium is 238 carats.

Police said the arrested had brought uranium from a mine in India some 20 years ago.

Police have kept the arrested persons in custody at the Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kathmandu for further investigation.
