Province No. 1’s Chief Minister Sherdhan Rai has reiterated that the provincial government would give special attention to controlling the Budhiganga River through short-term and long-term plans.
The Budhiganga River that flows between Itahari Sub-metropolitan City and Sundarharaincha Municipality has been causing widespread damage to life and property every year during monsoon as the river braks its banks and enters human settlements.
The Chief Minister said this while speaking at a function after handing over houses to 37 families who were displaced due to the flood and inundation caused by the swollen Budhiganga on August 11, 2017.
The houses to 37 landless squatters’ families at Itahari Sub-metropolis-10 were constructed with Rs 5.2 million financial assistance provided by Quick Rescue Team Nepal and other organisations through the emergency relief fund of the SOS Children’s Village, Itahari.
After handing over the shelters to the families concerned, Chief Minister Rai said this exemplary work carried out by SOS and other organisations with a humanitarian service motive should be emulated by all Nepalis.
He said the Budhiganga River should be harnessed for multi-use by formulating short and long-term plan.
The Chief Minister said the Province Government would work to resolve the landless squatters’ problems for the long-term.
Provincial lawmaker Neelam Basnet said she would bring a concrete plan for the risk reduction up to Duhabi.
The different organisations extending support in the construction of the shelters for the flood-affected families were honoured at the programme presided over by Buddha Bahadur Ekten.
