Rajamama Kusunda, lone speaker of Kusunda language, no more



Damauli, Tanahun, April 18

Rajamama Kusunda, who was the only surviving speaker of the Kusunda language, has passed away today at the age of 65. The Kusunda is a tribal community on the verge of extinction.

With Rajamama’s death has come the end of the spoken Kusunda language and it has raised concern who will continue the Kusunda language.
Rajamama who collapsed on the courtyard of his house at Vyas-10 in Tanahun district this morning died in a short while, his family said. He had been suffering from hypertension since long.

He was cremated at the cremation spot near the confluence of the Madi and Seti rivers. His daughter, 10-year-old Simanta lit the funeral pyre.

House of Representatives member Krishna Kumar Shrestha had carried the bier. Advisor of Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities coordination council Yam Bahadur Ale and district president Basundhara Gharti had draped Rajamama’s body with the Federation’s flag.

It is said, Rajamama’s spouse Indramaya will be observing the post-death rituals of her husband.
