Student organisations submit memo to Home Minister

Kathmandu, March 11

Three major student organisations have submitted a joint memorandum to Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa on Saturday drawing his attention to the increasing excesses against women and children of late and demanding concrete initiative to curb such practices.

A students delegation led by All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) president Nabina Lama, Nepal Students Union (NSU) president Nain Singh Mahar, and All Nepal National Independent Students Union (ANNISU) president Ranjit Tamang, submitted the memorandum to the Home Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The memorandum, among other things, calls for the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in mistreating a 20-year-old woman at Ghodaghodi Municipality in Kailali on witchery charge and those involved in the rape of an eight-year-old girl in Parsa last week, as well as for taking maximum action against the culprits and for providing appropriate justice and reparation to the victims.

The student organisations have urged the government to be stringent saying such incidents have been taking place frequently due to lax laws and impunity.

Receiving the memorandum, Home Minister Thapa said the government was committed to take sternest action possible against the perpetrators of heinous crimes as rape. He said that those involved in committing rape would not be let off the hook, adding that he has directed the security bodies to forward the legal action against the perpetrators.

He said that he has been further energised to fight against crime as all the student organisations came to the Ministry rising above their party affiliations and with a single voice against the wrong activities.

The Home Minister also urged the student union leaders to lend active support to the campaign waged by the Ministry of Home Affairs against such anomalies and ill-practices.
