Sonam Lhosar, the festival of Tamang community, was celebrated with much fanfare by organizing various programs across the country on Saturday.
Tamang people celebrated Sonam Losar as their New Year in Nepal. In regard to this, they celebrated the festival at Tundikhel in the capital which runs for two days on Saturday and Sunday.
The Tamang community have a unique tradition of marking each year with distinct creatures, from a list of 12 which are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog and Boar. This year the Tamang community has celebrated the year of rat which starts from January 25.
Similarly, this festival was also observed by minority Yolmo, Dura, the Thakalis of Mustang, the Dolpalis, and the Sinsas from Sankhuwasabha in the Himalayan region. According to the Bikram Sambat Nepali calendar, Sonam Lhosar falls on the month of Magh Shukla Pakshya every year.
People residing in Kathmandu Valley had gathered in Tundikhel to celebrate the festival. Earlier, they took out rally in various part of the Valley on the occasion.
Prior to this, Bagmati province no-3 government has declared public holiday at all 13 districts of the state on January 24 on the occasion of Sonam Lhosar.
