UK extends lockdown for weeks as COVID-19 cases spike

The United Kingdom has extended the ongoing lockdown for two weeks after coronavirus infection cases spiked.

The sectors which were earlier said to open from August 1 have been postponed for two weeks.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the time has come to put a break on a cycle and added that crowded places including casino will remain closed during the lockdown period.

Chief Medical Officer for England Chris Whitty warned that the coronavirus will spread in an alarming rate if the lockdown is lifted in all the sectors in Downing Street, a BBC report said.

According to a record maintained by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Friday, 3,200 people used to be infected with coronavirus on a daily basis in a previous week while the infection rate has increased to 4,200 a day this week.

As many 46,119 people have died and 303,181 have been infected with coronavirus as of Saturday morning, according to the latest figures collaged by Worldometer.
