The 10th general convention of the main opposition CPN-UML has begun on the bank of the Narayani in the Chitwan district on Friday with much fanfare.
The general convention is mandated to elect the new central committee of the party for the next five years, but it is almost certain that incumbent chairman KP Sharma Oli will be reelected.
The convention will end on Sunday after concluding the election procedures.
Inaugurating the convention, Oli said his party would prepare for the upcoming general conventions, expressing his confidence that the party would secure majority votes then.
Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Maoist Centre leader Leelamani Pokharel, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal Chairman Mahantha Thakur, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Kamal Thapa and Rastriya Janamorcha Chairman Chitra Bahadur KC also addressed the event attended by thousands of UML leaders and cadres, wishing for the success of the event.
The party had not invited the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN-Unified Socialist, alleging it of coming into existence illegally. Nepal had led the UML for 15 years from 1993 to 2008.
