National News

Bardiya district has only three fire engines to cater to all eight local levels at times of fire emergency. The incidents of fire have increased with the summer heat in the district but the district has only three fire trucks.

The Kathmandu University and the Institute of Automotive Engineering are organising the National Automotive Engineering Conference at Dhulikhel of Kavrepalanchok district on May 10 and 11.

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers by farmers is found increasing the acidity of the soil in their fields in Kanchanpur. The level of acidity in the soil has increased due to the lack of organic matter.

A team from the Narcotic Drugs Control Bureau Kathmandu and the Area Police Office Gajuri has arrested a person for possessing opium and marijuana this morning.

People of Sarmi at Tatopani rural municipality-7 in Jumla district have started falling ill due to an outbreak of an unidentified disease. The entire village of Sarmi has been affected by the disease, said Hemraj Kunwar, a teacher at Janata Sevak Basic School, Katiya Sarmi. According to him, no house in the village is spared from the disease.

A newborn taken for cremation was taken back to hospital after the people attending the funeral procession found out the child alive.

Two people have been arrested by the Myagdi Police on charge of assaulting school principal allegedly motivated by caste-based discrimination. Resh Bahadur Bishwakarma, head teacher at the Janajyoti Basic School based in Raghuganga rural municipality, 42, was allegedly manhandled by two locals Bal Bahadur Roka and Jitendra Jugjali for just the victim belongs to the Dalit community, said the police. The two have also been charged with verbally abusing and thrashing the school principal, leaving him injured.

The festival of Ramadan, which is observed as the month of fasting by the Muslims, begins from Tuesday. The festival is marked to observe the month when the Qaran, the great holy book of the Muslims, was revealed. The beginning and end of Ramadan are determined by the lunar Islamic calendar called Hijri.

The Nepali Congress has amended its circulation in connection to the upcoming nationwide public awareness drive scheduled to kick off from May 8 and has made sure that every programme under the campaign would have women participants.

A meeting held today at the Home Ministry formed the Republic Day Main Celebrations Committee under the chair of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli decided to observe the Day for three days from May 28 to 30 by organizing various programmes at home and Nepali Missions abroad. Nepal celebrates the 15th Jeth in Nepali calendar every year as the Republic Day. This year, the Day falls on May 29.

The Federal Socialist Forum Nepal and Naya Shakti Party Nepal have unified amid a programme here in the capital today. After the unification, the new party is named Socialist Party Nepal.
